Behind the shades of the leaves, the yellow bird stood admiring the beauty of the morning.
Mathew was cutting open the coconut with a crowbar, when his son- Sibin’s friend Abin came to
the house on a scooter. Mathew looked to his house, and walked towards Abin. Mathew’s eyes
started dripping on seeing Abin so successful and happy, when his own son was caught in the trap
of drugs and alcohol. Mathew had the highest of hopes for his son, and just the thought of him
turning the exact opposite of his hopes really weighed heavy on Mathew. Abin couldn’t bear to see
his friend’s dad in all this trouble, and so he had come up with a plan to make Sibin change his
ways. Abin gave a phone to Sibin’s Dad, and told him to give the phone to Sibin, and to say the
exact words as was planned. Abin had a firm belief that this whole play of theirs would bring out a
change in Sibin for the good. Mathew pleaded to Abin to somehow make Sibin a better person.
Abin comforted Sibin’s Dad and left. Mathew looked upon Abin departure with sad eyes. He realised
that it’s the consequence of giving all the freedom in the world to a child who lost his mother early
on, which resulted in him turning out the way he did. And Mathew feels that if he had enforced
strictness, then maybe his son would have turned out sucessful like Abin. After a night out full of
drinks with his buddies, it was only at the next morning that Sibin decided to come to meet his Dad.
Mathew thought of this as an opportune moment to hand over the phone to his son. Mathew created
a lazy setting by saying that he got the phone from some house which hosted a wedding, and that he
should return the phone to its rightful owner when the call comes. Mathew also added in that he
wasn’t to stay up till late at night with his friends drinking and that he should come home early.Sibin
silently agreed to it all, but instantly went outside and met with his friend Kiran. They examined the
phone. Kiran tried telling Sibin to cut off his large grown beard as it made him look like a drug
addict, but Sibin didn’t take actually care as replied that it was a part of who he was, and that cutting
it down would be like taking a part of him away from him. Both Sibin and Kiran were glad with the
news of the phone. They felt they could use the money to buy a few more bottle of drinks. As
expected, the phone rang. The person who called gave the location of where to bring the phone, and
Sibin wholeheartedly took it there. To Sibin’s utmost surprise a person came, being pushed in a
wheelchair. The person in the wheelchair explained his story of how he drank and drove recklessly
and ended up in the wheelchair. And then this person left after giving Sibin a Rosary. The words of
this stranger dug deep in Sibin and felt like life changing. He felt a change in his state of mind. Sibin
asked himself if he’ll be sitting on that wheelchair in the near future.
Mathew couldn’t believe the change that had happened to his son. He felt an indescribable
amount of respect towards Abin.
